Choosing quality nursery furniture

Planning for your first child is a happy and exciting event. You want your childs nursery and the nursery furniture to be like a fairy tale dream, but it is important to ponder you and your childs comfort and security first. So when designing that new nursery take time to ponder the following advice.

Be sure to install a working smoke alarm in your childs room or right outside the room. When your child begins to crawl its essential that any spare electrical outlet is covered with a simple plastic plug protector to prevent your inquisitive child from sticking his fingers. Wherever possible, try to hide electrical cords and sockets with nursery furniture your baby cant move, like wardrobes.

The next most essential item is your baby cot since this is the place they will initially spend most of their time in the first few months. Cots are also one of the primary causes of baby injury and fatalities so it is very important to ensure your cot follows the appropriate safety regulations. Your cot should be deep enough so your youngster is unable to climb out. The bars of the cot should be close enough together to prevent your baby from trapping their head. Make sure that if the cot has drop down sides that they have sturdy locks to prevent them from being accidently operated by your child. If you have a used cot ALWAYS purchase a new mattress for each child. Your mattress should have a gap of not more than 4cm around the outside of the cot to prevent your child from becoming trapped.

Remember to put your newborn down to sleep on her back to lower the risks of cot death(SIDS) and refrain from using cushions or very fluffy bedding in the crib. If using a nightlight ensure it is placed away from the cot and any other soft furnishings

Try to arrange your baby furniture in a way that prevents positioning things in front of windows. Never position low nursery furniture your childlittle one can use to climb on or things like cots or changing stations in front of windows to prevent him from perhaps falling out. Keep the windows in the nursery securely locked. If you have to open a window to create ventilation ensure the window is secured and never open more than 5cm, there are fastenings on the market that prevent windows from being opened too far.

Another piece of baby furniture responsible for numerous infant injuries is the changing table. Using a u - shaped changing mat can assist greatly in making sure your child cant roll away and some changing tables even have straps to fix your child. Changing equipment should be positioned beyond the child’s reach in a drawer of on a shelf. Babies and toddlers are naturally inquisitive and nappy sacks or rash creams can be potentially dangerous.

Window dressings are a major reason of injuries and death in babies. Avoid using long curtains or drapes that may trap and choke a young toddler and never hang blinds with long cords in your baby’s rrom. If you do use blinds, be sure to fold the cords away high above baby’s reach and never place nursery furniture your baby occupies, like her cot or the changing table, near the blinds.
